Caring for Your Cut Roses…

cut rosesCaring for your cut roses…

·         If you have cut roses but won’t be arranging them until later, get them into warm water as soon as possible.  Roses need hydration!

·         Once you are ready to arrange your roses, always use a clean vase to prevent any bacteria from damaging the roses.

·         Fill the vase ¾ full with warm water.  Warm water can be absorbed easier by the roses, allowing for the nutrients to reach the bloom quickly!

·         Flower food is a key ingredient to helping your roses last longer.  Be sure to follow the directions on the package when adding the food to the water.  If you do not have any packaged flower food available, you can make your own using 3 teaspoons of non-diet lemon-lime soda and 1 teaspoon of bleach to one quart of warm water.

·         Remove any foliage that would fall below the water line.  Leaves cause bacteria to grow in the water which will shorten the vase life of the roses.

·         To cut your stems properly, you should hold the bottom of the roses under water and cut each stem at an angel, removing about an inch of stem.  It is best to cut the stems under water because this allows for the roses to start absorbing water immediately.

·         For optimum vase life, repeat these steps every three days!

Keeping your roses looking beautiful…

·         Always avoid displaying your roses in direct sunlight and near any drafts

·         Keep your roses away from ripening fruit as these give off ethylene gas, which shortens the life of the cut flowers.

·         Gently remove any discolored or drooping petals.

If your roses wilt, they can be revived!

·         Submerge the entire roses under water, such as a sink or bathtub.  In about 30 minutes to an hour, the roses will have absorbed enough water to become replenished.  Before putting it back into the vase, remember to cut off one inch of the stem under water using a sharp knife or pair scissors.

Garden Roses

Garden Roses

Garden roses are the most fragrant roses that are grown.  They are a symbol of grace and charm.  With their breathtaking scent, they are one of the most popular and widely cultivated groups of flowering plants, especially in temperate climates. Numerous cultivars have been produced, especially over the last two centuries, though roses have been known in the garden for millennia’s beforehand.

While most garden roses are grown for their fragrance and beauty, some are also valued for other reasons, with its large bushes it can provide ground cover or be useful for hedging.

Arranging Garden Roses can be achieved in a very simple way by taking two or three blooms cut short and displayed in a small vase, either on their own or mixed with other flowers.  Nothing can be easier to do and of course it allows you to enjoy garden roses spread out over several rooms.  Always check the water level in small container daily as garden roses are very thirsty flowers.

Always try to give an impression of natural growth when working with garden roses.  Show off the different angles of their large open blooms by positioning some facing outwards to the side.  This adds to the charm of the arrangement.

For a contemporary, minimalist look, arrange several tall, slim bud vases in a row, each containing a single rose.  For a stunning, easy to create centerpiece, float the open rose heads in a large bowl of fresh water and add some foliage or glass beads.  This will create an interesting, textural effect.

DIY: Submerged Rose Centerpiece

Submerged Rose CPWhat you’ll need:
Glass cylinder vases (variegated or all the same height)

Frog (flower stem holder for submersion)

Decorative glass beads or gems

Your favorite colored roses (a bunch of them, if you have extra that’s ok, well teach you a tip on how you can utilize your extra roses at the end of this tutorial!)

Floating candles

How to create

           1.  Cut your rose stem, not at an angle, but directly across so it lays flat against the frog flower holder

2.       Press spikes of the frog into the xylem or the stem of the rose (this is what holds the flower in place in the vase without it floating)

3.       Place the attached rose with the frog in the cylinder vase making sure its standing up right

4.       Pour some decorative rocks or gems at the bottom of your vase to hide the frog, it also gives it a more complete elegant look

5.       Pour water into the vase until the full rose is submerged, you may get oxygen bubbles on the flower but those will go away

6.       Once the full rose has been submerged place the floating candle on the surface of the water & make sure it is steadily floating without any water touching the wick

7.       Do not light the floating candle and then put it in the water, make sure the candle is in the water before lighting

8.       The safest and easiest way to do this is to light a long tapered candle and use it to light the wick of the floating candle.

9.       You can place other tea light candles around the centerpiece to add more light if that’s the look you’re going for

Tip!

If you have extra roses left over from your project, you can definitely pull the rose petals off the bud & use them around your display.  It adds a decorative touch to a really creative centerpiece that all your guests will rant & rave about at your next gathering!

Flowering Facts: Roses and their colors…

Roses by the bunch in many colors at Field of Flowers

Roses have been present on earth for millions of years.  Montana and Oregon have some rose fossil records dating back some 35 million years.  The rose flower has the most complicated family tree of any known flower species and has over 30,000 varieties.

Historically, roses have been used in incredibly extravagant ways.  Cleopatra once received her beloved Marc Antony in a room literally knee deep in rose petals.  The Romans thought nothing of carpeting their huge banquet halls with rose petals.

The rose is a popular design theme for china, clothing, carpets, tapestries and more.  The rose inspires fashion, interior design, sculpture, architecture and music.  There are over 4,000 songs written about roses.

There is nothing quite like a vase of fresh roses.  Available in countless color tones, each cultivar has a personality of its’ own.  The variations in shape, size, petal count, fragrance, opening performance and stem length make each rose unique.

The language of roses is expressed in the different colors.  Love, affection, friendship, thankfulness, joy and other emotions are represented by rose colors.  Red roses show love, passion and respect.  Pink roses communicate happiness, appreciation, admiration, friendship and sympathy.  Light pink roses denote grace, joy and gentility.  Dark pink roses are to signify thankfulness.  Lavender symbolizes love at first sight and enchantment.  White roses signify spiritual love and purity. Yellow roses show care, friendship, joy and gladness.  Coral roses imply desire.  Peach roses indicate modesty.  Orange roses display enthusiasm, desire and fascination.

For an elegant and casual look, take a rectangular vase and cut roses so that the head is just above the top of the vase.  Use enough roses to create a full arrangement.  Insert bear grass to add interesting lines.  A grouping of three vases can be done.  Use other flowers in the same color tones or use different colors of roses for a stunning display.
