Flowering Facts: Anthuriums

Anthurium

  • Anthurium cut stems are available to purchase all year round and have a vase life of 14-28 days.
  • They should be stored in cool temperatures, but not below 45°F.
  • Re-cut the stems about ½ inch every five days.
  • Anthuriums come in shades of red, burgundy, white, pink, orange, green, brown and variegated.
  • The potting soil preferred by Anthuriums is one that retains moisture but is also well draining.
  • The plant needs to stay moist at all times but should not be water-logged. The soil can either be watered thoroughly and then allowed to slightly dry before re-watering or the plant can be watered every two to three days with a small amount of water.
  • Anthuriums need moderate warmth with their environment.  They do best at   60-90°F. Temperatures above 90°F can cause loss of blooms, drying of foliage and fading of the plant.
  • Anthuriums needs plenty of bright indirect sunlight throughout the year. Keep the plant at least five feet from windows to prevent burning or overheating especially during the summer months.
  • Repotting should be done every two years in the spring.
  • One common problem with Anthuriums is gnats which can be prevented by keeping the plant free of standing water and dead foliage.
  • Keep Anthurium plants away from pets and children as they are considered toxic if consumed.

Flowering Facts: Orchid Plants

orchid vase• One of our more popular Orchid arrangements is the Orchid plant in glass vase. This design is beautiful to look at, but it will not last forever.
• While the Orchid is in the vase, and still in bloom, you should mist the plant once a week.
• Once the blooms are gone you must remove the plant from the vase in order for it to bloom again.
• These Orchids should not be repotted as they do not need soil to grow. Also, repotting them will cause for water to accumulate which can kill the plant.
• Once the plant is removed from the vase you need to attach it to a tree with a large canopy that can provide shade and block any direct sunlight.
• The Orchid should be kept in warm and humid temperatures.
• You can then water the plant every two weeks. However, Orchids do well over long periods of time without watering.

Happy Father’s Day!

Father's DayFather’s day is a time we have to honor our fathers but better yet it is a day to enjoy spending time with our Dads and appreciate everything they’ve done for us. What a father really wants is to have healthy, happy and successful kids. And, he just wants to spend some time with you on this special day. Today life is so busy at times for both fathers and kids… so taking the time to cherish the day with him is really all he wants.

Whether biological, adopted or informally, if they are a father figure to you, give him some recognition today and don’t hesitate to call him “Dad.”

If you have a Dad that’s interested in gardening get him a little plant so that when it can be re-potted you both can share that planting time together and watch it grow!

Flowering Facts: Bromeliads

  • BromeliadInflorescences (the flowering parts of a plant) may arise from the “cup” or be born within the “cup.” The “cup” or the “vase” is formed in the center of many bromeliads by overlapping leaves and is a holding tank or reservoir for water.
  • Bromeliads can be used in the landscape in frost-free areas of the state or grown in containers that can be moved indoors in areas where freezes occur.
  • The majority of bromeliads thrive outdoors in Florida’s high summer temperatures, even in excess of 100°F. In a home, bromeliads do best at 70-75°F during the day and between 60 and 65°F at night.
  • In south Florida, bromeliads can be grown outdoors unprotected during most winters.
  • In a home, a window with a southern, eastern or western exposure is satisfactory for bromeliad growth, but most species must not be exposed to direct sunlight.
  • A yellowish or pale green plant may indicate too much light and a darker green plant may indicate not enough light.
  • Bromeliads are extremely tolerant of low-moisture conditions and will survive prolonged periods of drought.
  • Bromeliads grown in a potting mix or in the landscape should be watered when the soil surface feels dry.
  • Plants grown in pots should be watered thoroughly, until water runs out of the bottom of the pot and then not watered again until the surface feels dry. Watering thoroughly once a week is usually sufficient.

National Gardening Exercise Day

National Gardening Day takes place yearly on June 6th. This year it happens to fall on a Thursday. Most people can agree that gardening is relaxing. It’s not only therapeutic for our mind but also body and soul. National Gardening Exercise Day gives us an opportunity to go outside and burn off calories while having fun doing it! This holiday is intended to recognize the benefits of physical strength that comes from the act of gardening.

Gardening is exercise! Experts say that gardening uses all of the major muscle groups in the various activities and tasks it takes to garden. In addition, the more strenuous activities such as raking, hoeing and digging are both aerobic and muscle strengthening.

Take the time today to celebrate one of America’s favorite hobbies. Go out and get some fresh air and burn some calories while you garden your little heart out!

Fun Facts: Earth Day

Earth-DayEarth Day is the celebration of our home and home to all the animals and ecosystems throughout. Did you know that in some elementary schools, after Halloween and Christmas, Earth Day is the largest celebrated holiday? It is now observed in 175 countries and is the largest secular modern day holiday in the world. Here are some interesting, fun facts for you to recycle to your friends and get in the “go green” mindset.

• Each year billions of used batteries are thrown away in the United States. This constitutes 88% of the mercury and 54% of the cadmium deposited into our landfills.
• Each gallon of fuel releases 20lbs of Carbon Dioxide into the air.
• Approximately 5 million tons of oil produced in the world each year ends up in the ocean.
• Recycling 1 aluminum can saves enough energy to watch a TV for 3 hours – it’s equal to half a galloon of gasoline.
• Earth Day is a relatively new holiday and was first celebrated on April 22nd in 1970. More than 20 million Americans participated in this first Earth Day celebration.
• Earth Day was founded by the senator of Wisconsin.
• April 22nd is the first official day of spring in the Northern hemisphere and of fall in the Southern hemisphere and was chosen to be Earth Day for this reason.
• Energy we save when we recycle 1 glass bottle is enough to light a traditional light bulb for 4 hours.
• 14 billion pounds of trash is dumped into the ocean every year.
• Never underestimate the importance of recycling: if every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year.
• More than 20,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.
• Only 11% of the earth’s surface is used to grow food.
• A highlight of the annual Earth Day ceremony at the United Nations is the ringing of the Peace Bell that was given to the UN by Japan. It is made from coins given by school children to further peace on our planet.

Let’s try and make our home a much greener place to live… – Happy Earth Day!

Springtime Blooming Plant Care

Hyacinth iStockTaking good care of your new plants is a very important step to keeping and maintaining your plants’ life. These simple steps will assist you in keeping your house and garden lavishly green throughout the year!

• Keep plants in medium-light locations – out of direct sunlight.
• Natural light is best, but some plants can also thrive in office fluorescent light. Most flowering potted plants should be placed in areas with the most light in order to maintain good flower color and promote the maximum number of flowers to open. Foliage plants will do well under lower light levels and can be placed in areas providing reduced light.
• Plant soil should be kept moist at all times, not drenched but damp to touch.
• Plants should not be allowed to dry out or wilt. Be careful to avoid over watering – do not allow plants to stand in water.
• Avoid wetting plant leaves, this can cause a bacteria and spread to other leaves.
• Avoid excessive heat or cold.
• Plants should be kept in a cool spot (between 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit) for best performance. They should be kept away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or next to televisions or radiators. (Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes plants to dehydrate.)

Try these tips out and your plants will appreciate them!
