Fun Fact: Peace Lilies Clean Your House!

Tired of scrubbing your bath room? Plant-filled bathrooms contain up to 60% less mold, mildew and bacteria than bathrooms without plants, reveals a NASA study.
Top Choice: A Peace Lily!

The over sized leaves soak up microscopic mold spores and carry them down their roots, where they’re used for food. Fewer spores landing on your curtains and tiles mean less cleaning for you! Peace lilies also absorb chemical vapors from common bathroom products

3 Simple Ways to Add Orchids to Your Life

Orchids are a favorite flower of many and it is no wonder why — they have a simple yet undeniable elegance and come in an abundance of colors, shapes, and forms. Here are a few simple ways to add orchids to your life…

1. From simple to elaborate centerpieces – Orchids add a beautiful touch for any occasion. Here are some examples…

In the photo at the top of this post, a simple and elegant look is created by taking a single stem Green Cymbidium Orchid cut to a shorter length, adding a little bit of bear grass and placing them in small square cube for a very simple and elegant look. Use just one, or line up a few of these simple arrangements for more impact.

For a more dramatic centerpiece you can use the yellow Oncidium orchids shown here with fresh cut lemons in large square glass cubes. This photo show three cube vases lined up against each other and the yellow orchids with yellow lemons adds pizzazz and a very fresh spirit. The same idea could use limes, oranges, or other fruits. Mix and match colors to match your setting.

2.  Wear orchids – For an elegant up-do, you can take a few white Cymbidium blooms and pin them in your hair. They are an eye catching add on to any look. With the vast selection of different orchids and colors, the options are endless.

3. Orchids can be used in various ways to help decorate any party scene, from a wedding to a dinner party.

Above, a few green and purple Dendrobium Orchid stems with a purple ribbon accenting a rustic chair, perfect for a splash of color.

Its year-round availability and colorful variety give the anthurium its popularity.  Anthuriums can be found in red, pink, purple, white and green, and can even be speckled, striped and suffused with color.  They have a significantly long decorative life – regularly 14 to 28 days, and frequently even longer.

Flowering Facts: Chrysanthemum…or you might just say Mum

Mum Plant with Butterflies created by Field of Flowers

The beauty of a chrysanthemum is immediately evident – and it’s no wonder.  The word “chrysanthemum” comes from the Greek word for “golden flower.”   Traditionally and continuously an important cut flower, chrysanthemums come in numerous varieties, and when handled appropriately, have a long post-harvest life.

If harvested as buds, chrysanthemums can be opened in fresh-flower solutions containing 2 – 3 % sugar!  The result is a beautiful flower in vibrant hues – flower colors include white, yellow, orange, bronze, red, purple and pink. A single-type mum will appear as a daisy-like central eye, with petals that resemble quills.

Don’t be skeptical about purchasing chrysanthemums that are two-thirds to three-quarter open – these flowers will actually last longer than the tighter harvest ones. The popularity of mums has had longevity – much like the flower itself.

Top picks for indoor plants

Plants are commonly known for converting carbon dioxide into oxygen, but certain plants are also good for ridding our air of indoor contaminants.

Three common types of household toxins are Benzene-based, Formaldehyde-based and Trichloroethylene-based.

  • Some sources of Benzene-based toxins include detergents, plastics, tobacco smoke and synthetic fibers.A few of the best plants to remove these toxins are the Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), Gerbera Daisy and Alglaonema (Chinese Evergreen).
  • Formaldehyde-based toxins originate from such items as carpeting, furniture, cleaners and paper products. Bamboo plants, Philodendrons, Ivy and Golden Pothos are just some green plants that are best for the removal of these toxins.
  • Inks, varnishes, adhesives and paints are a couple examples of where Trichloroethylene-based toxins may come from. Plants associated with the removal of these toxins include Dracaena, Gerbera Daisy, Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) and Chrysanthemum.

Why are plants important?

Plants are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. You may not be aware, but indoor air quality is generally more polluted than outdoor air quality and with people spending a majority of their time indoors, this can lead to illness and even death. Green plants, through a process known as photosynthesis, use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. They also remove carbon monoxide and Formaldehyde from the air, improving the indoor air quality (IAQ). With the presence of more green plants, we will have increased clean oxygen allowing for healthier humans. According to the Forest Stewardship Council, plants are known to increase productivity and decrease absenteeism rates in businesses. Studies also show that people report being happier and more content in the work place when there are plants present.
