Flowering Facts: Poinsettia Plant

poinsettiaNo flower rings Christmas more like the festive Poinsettia! Learn some fun facts about this traditional Christmas plant…

Poinsettia_Red_Dress_in_Holiday_Containerlg• Many plants in the Euphorbiaceae family, including the Poinsettia, ooze a milky substance that is more like a sap and could cause a slight irritation for people that are allergic to latex. For pets this sap can cause a mild irritation or nausea. It is a good idea to keep pets away from the plant, especially puppies and kittens.
• Poinsettias are actually NOT poisonous. Recent studies have shown that a 50lb child would have to consume over 500 leaves to have any harmful effects. Poinsettia leaves have an awful taste, tough! Keep your pets are not chewing on the leaves because it can cause nausea and vomiting.
• The beautiful colored parts of the plant that most believe to be the “flower” are actually colored bracts, which are the leaves.
• Joel Roberts Poinsett was a botanist and introduced the Poinsettia to the United States from Mexico in 1828.
• In Mexico this is a shrub that can grow 10-15 feet tall.
• There are more than 100 varieties of poinsettias available today. Poinsettias come in colors like the traditional red, white, pink, burgundy, marbled and speckled.
• December 12th is Poinsettia Day. This day marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett in 1851.

Tips & Care for your Cut Sunflowers

sunflowers MDFirst, when you arrive home remove any packaging & stem bindings as well as any leaves that would be submerged under water in your vase. Next, rinse stems under tepid running water (sunflowers are often field grown and have “hairy” stems, so they capture debris that can contaminate vase solutions.) Re-cut stems on an angle with a clean, sharp blade, removing at least 1 inch of stem. Immediately dip or place stem ends into a hydration solution to help the flowers take up water more quickly (particularly important for sunflowers), then place them into clean, disinfected containers half filled with properly proportioned flower-food solution or holding solution. Did you know? These flowers do not benefit nutritionally from flower food, but flower food should be used because the bactericide helps control the growth of microbes in containers, which helps prevent stem blockage and premature wilting. For extra care; re-cut the stems, wash containers & change flower-food solution every other day to prevent bacteria buildup and keep nutrient solution flowing up the stems. Tip! Sunflowers are somewhat geotropic (affected by gravity), so store them as vertical as possible, particularly at room temperatures, so their heads won’t nod even more.

Brighten your space with Sunflowers!

Sunflowers in Glass BowlFall is just starting to set in, and the Sunflowers are available at spectacular prices. There are so many reasons to celebrate the joys of life with these incredibly beautiful, symbolic flowers. From their association with the sun and life, to their attention getting color and the fact that they are a native American flower!

The origins of the name of the Sunflower is plain to see! The Sunflower has the shape of a sun. And its scientific name, Helianthus annuus, is derived from the ancient sun god, Helios. Fancy that. It is a myth that Sunflowers are heliotropic, or follow the sun.

Sunflowers can be dyed an amazing variety of colors, but their natural eye popping yellow is by far the nicest choice. The bright color is associated with everything from happiness, gold and…you guessed it…sunshine. The fact that the petals surround a rich, dark heart of chocolate brown makes its yellow coloration even stronger.

Did you know? Sunflowers are a native species to the Americas and are an important economical crop for the U.S.

Flowering Facts: Sunflowers

sunflower pic 11Sunflowers have nodding daisy-like blossoms, 2 to 10 or more inches in diameter.  The flower heads are made up of “petals,” (ray florets) surrounding central disks that compromise hundreds of tiny yellow, brown, green, or deep purple flowers.  Some varieties, like Teddy Bear Sunflowers, have more rows of petals and appear to not have any disk florets in the center.  Sunflowers offer 5 to 14 days of vase life, depending on variety, environmental conditions and care.  Sunflowers are available year-round, although production peaks from June through October.

Replant your Sunflower Seeds!

SUNFLOWER SEEDS PT 1After your beautiful sunflowers dry out and start to wilt, you’ll notice the center of the sunflower starting to show some seeds. The seeds should be full in size and dark colored. If the centers are more of a light green with small buds, they are not quite ready to be plucked.

Fully developed seeds can be dried out and planted one by one, allowing about a foot of space between each seed. Plant the seeds about ½” under the soil’s surface and water twice daily, keeping the soil moist. The seeds should germinate within 14 days.

TIP: Sunflowers thrive best during the summer and in an area that receives plenty of sunshine!

It’s Sunflower Season!

SunflowerSunflowers are one of four major crops of global importance that are native to the United States. Several million acres of land are devoted to the production of ornamental, oil-seed and food-producing crops. These flowers are native to the plains of North America, from southern Canada to northern Mexico, as well as to portions of South America. Sunflowers will dry nicely standing in a vase. To dry them so their heads face upward, hang them upside down in a warm, dark, well-ventilated area. The giant flower on sunflowers is actually made up of many tiny blooms, the center of the sunflower, where the seeds develop, is made up of tiny blossoms that bees absolutely love. Sunflowers typically grow between 5 and 12 feet tall. At the bud stage, sunflowers exhibit a unique trait called heliotropism — the bud of the sunflower faces the sun at all times throughout the day, starting the day facing east, and ending it facing west. The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas and the national flower of Ukraine. Sunflowers need full sun and rich, well-drained soil to reach their maximum height.

Garden Roses

Garden Roses

Garden roses are the most fragrant roses that are grown.  They are a symbol of grace and charm.  With their breathtaking scent, they are one of the most popular and widely cultivated groups of flowering plants, especially in temperate climates. Numerous cultivars have been produced, especially over the last two centuries, though roses have been known in the garden for millennia’s beforehand.

While most garden roses are grown for their fragrance and beauty, some are also valued for other reasons, with its large bushes it can provide ground cover or be useful for hedging.

Arranging Garden Roses can be achieved in a very simple way by taking two or three blooms cut short and displayed in a small vase, either on their own or mixed with other flowers.  Nothing can be easier to do and of course it allows you to enjoy garden roses spread out over several rooms.  Always check the water level in small container daily as garden roses are very thirsty flowers.

Always try to give an impression of natural growth when working with garden roses.  Show off the different angles of their large open blooms by positioning some facing outwards to the side.  This adds to the charm of the arrangement.

For a contemporary, minimalist look, arrange several tall, slim bud vases in a row, each containing a single rose.  For a stunning, easy to create centerpiece, float the open rose heads in a large bowl of fresh water and add some foliage or glass beads.  This will create an interesting, textural effect.

DIY: Natural Rose Dye for Fabric

Rose Dyed FabricMaterials needed:
Water
Rose Flower buds
Vinegar
Lemon Juice
Fabric (washed and dried)

1. The first step is to take the rose flower buds, full bloom, and chop them up into tiny pieces. Place this into a pot then add double the amount of water to the flowers.

2. Place this on the stove and bring to a boil, then turn the burner to low and simmer for about an hour. Meanwhile, place you fabric into a separate pot or bowl of three parts cold water and one part vinegar. Let the fabric soak in the solution for an hour, or until the dye is ready. After the fabric has soaked, rinse it out under the faucet then squeeze out excess water.

3. When the dye is done simmering, strain, then toss the petals. There will be excess dye soaked into the petals, so squeeze it out to make the most of your materials. Add lemon juice to activate the alkaloids and the color of dye will be a brilliant pink. Next, add the fabric to the pot and let soak for a few hours or overnight depending on the shade of pink wanted.
