Flowering Facts: Tulips

tulipsThough Tulips tend to be associated with Dutch culture, they were actually first grown in the Middle East.  The name “tulip” originates from the Turkish word for “turbin.”  This might have a lot to do with the particular shape of the flower which replicates the look of a turbin.   After being cultivated in the Middle East the tulip made its way to Holland where in the 16th century they were considered precious & sold for extremely high prices.

Tulips tend to be associated with imagination & love and red tulips were considered to be romantic presents during the Victorian era.

How to stop Tulips from Drooping

Tulip Plant1Tulips are well known for drooping once cut and put into a vase. You can try to avoid this by following a few of these steps. First make sure your Tulips are well hydrated and have the proper nutrients (grab a complimentary packet of our flower food when you stop into our market). You want to try to put your Tulips in a long slender vase to act as a brace to hold them straighter without drooping over the top. Re-cut the stems at an angle with a sharp knife or professional cutting sheers, try to cut the stems about an inch from the bottom while cutting under water. Remove all extra foliage and leaves that will be submerged in the water. You want to remove the excess foliage because those leaves will create bacteria in the vase and kill your fresh cut stems quicker. A trick to training the stems to stand straight is wrapping them gently with a plastic wrap exposing the stems so they can drink the water in the vase. Keep the arrangement like this for about 5 hours or overnight. This will allow the Tulips to absorb water into the stems and keep the shape of the plastic wrap sleeve. Always be sure to keep your Tulips out of direct sunlight, as they tend to follow light sources. Hydrate them frequently because dehydrated Tulips droop quicker…Even give them a fresh trip after a few days to make sure that water uptake is not being slowed by dulled stems with bacteria growth.

Here’s a tip to try! Add a penny dated prior to 1981 to the water. The copper found in the penny may help the Tulips stand up in the vase!

Symbolism of Lilies

lily symbolismSymbolism

To the ancient Greeks, the lily stood for tenderness, while early Christians used the lily as a symbol of purity. Oddly, the famous “lily” portrayed in France’s “fleur de lys” heraldry, first adopted by the French court in 1179, actually depicts an iris.

Lilly Fun Facts!

orange lilyThe lily, a flower revered by several cultures throughout history, has been used for symbolic and medicinal purposes, according to the Flowers & Plants Association. While several varieties produce bright colors, the famous “Madonna Lily” only blooms white.

Cultivation History

People have cultivated the lily for at least three millennia. Ancient Chinese and Assyrians revered the flower. Until the 1500s, however, the Madonna Lily remained the only known variety of the plant outside of Asia.

Medicinal Uses

Chinese folk medicine included lilies in remedies to bring good luck. Europeans also have used lilies in medicinal preparations throughout history. Lilies seemed to have some effect against depression and ingestion of toxins.

Pet Toxicity

While lilies may add elegance to a garden, they contain compounds that act as a deadly poison on cats. Homeowners should prevent their cats from going near lilies at all times.

Say the right thing, with Flowers!

New Classic Collection CField of Flowers makes being romantic easy…

But what to say and with what flower?

Here are some traditional meanings for some other flowers often sent for Valentine’s Day or other touching moments:

Gardenia – I love you secretly
Gladiolus – you pierce my heart
Lilly of the Valley – let us make up
Rose – I love you passionately
Sweet William – you are gallant, suave and perfect
Violet – I return your love
Green Leaves – represented hope in a love affair. Often rumored to be the reason why British girls sprinkled bay leaves with rose’s water and put them on their pillows on Valentines’ Day Eve in hopes to see their loved one in their dreams.
