Caring for your Lilies

Oriental Lilies in Glass VaseThere are many types of lilies. From the more commonly available ones such as the Stargazer lilies, Casablanca lilies, and Madonna Lilies to the rarer imported ones such as the Peruvian lilies, Sumatra lilies, African Queen lilies, and Maywood lilies. Despite the vast varieties of lilies, the care for fresh cut lilies, such as those you get from your local florists is rather similar.

You’ll notice the pollen in the center of your lilies. These pollens, if not removed, will stain the lily petals, your table tops, hands, or clothing. Therefore, it is essential for you to remove all the stamens once the lily bud begins to bloom.

The best time to remove the stamens from the lily is when the lily bud is half-bloomed and the stamens are yet to be pollinated. You can easily pull off the stamens with your fingers. However, you would need a scissors to remove the pollinated stamens if the lily has fully bloomed, it will stain your fingers.

Some lilies can have more than one bud on each stem. The timing and blooming process for each bud in a stem varies. One flower may wither earlier before the other buds have bloomed. If this is the case, simply cut the wilted flower off and allow the other buds to bloom.

Be sure to always cut your fresh stems again UNDER WATER before placing them in your vase or container at home. This will help the roots of the stem drink water & not dry out before placing them in water.

Symbolism of Lilies

lily symbolismSymbolism

To the ancient Greeks, the lily stood for tenderness, while early Christians used the lily as a symbol of purity. Oddly, the famous “lily” portrayed in France’s “fleur de lys” heraldry, first adopted by the French court in 1179, actually depicts an iris.

Lilly Fun Facts!

orange lilyThe lily, a flower revered by several cultures throughout history, has been used for symbolic and medicinal purposes, according to the Flowers & Plants Association. While several varieties produce bright colors, the famous “Madonna Lily” only blooms white.

Cultivation History

People have cultivated the lily for at least three millennia. Ancient Chinese and Assyrians revered the flower. Until the 1500s, however, the Madonna Lily remained the only known variety of the plant outside of Asia.

Medicinal Uses

Chinese folk medicine included lilies in remedies to bring good luck. Europeans also have used lilies in medicinal preparations throughout history. Lilies seemed to have some effect against depression and ingestion of toxins.

Pet Toxicity

While lilies may add elegance to a garden, they contain compounds that act as a deadly poison on cats. Homeowners should prevent their cats from going near lilies at all times.

Caring for Your Cut Roses…

cut rosesCaring for your cut roses…

·         If you have cut roses but won’t be arranging them until later, get them into warm water as soon as possible.  Roses need hydration!

·         Once you are ready to arrange your roses, always use a clean vase to prevent any bacteria from damaging the roses.

·         Fill the vase ¾ full with warm water.  Warm water can be absorbed easier by the roses, allowing for the nutrients to reach the bloom quickly!

·         Flower food is a key ingredient to helping your roses last longer.  Be sure to follow the directions on the package when adding the food to the water.  If you do not have any packaged flower food available, you can make your own using 3 teaspoons of non-diet lemon-lime soda and 1 teaspoon of bleach to one quart of warm water.

·         Remove any foliage that would fall below the water line.  Leaves cause bacteria to grow in the water which will shorten the vase life of the roses.

·         To cut your stems properly, you should hold the bottom of the roses under water and cut each stem at an angel, removing about an inch of stem.  It is best to cut the stems under water because this allows for the roses to start absorbing water immediately.

·         For optimum vase life, repeat these steps every three days!

Keeping your roses looking beautiful…

·         Always avoid displaying your roses in direct sunlight and near any drafts

·         Keep your roses away from ripening fruit as these give off ethylene gas, which shortens the life of the cut flowers.

·         Gently remove any discolored or drooping petals.

If your roses wilt, they can be revived!

·         Submerge the entire roses under water, such as a sink or bathtub.  In about 30 minutes to an hour, the roses will have absorbed enough water to become replenished.  Before putting it back into the vase, remember to cut off one inch of the stem under water using a sharp knife or pair scissors.
