Garden Roses

Garden Roses

Garden roses are the most fragrant roses that are grown.  They are a symbol of grace and charm.  With their breathtaking scent, they are one of the most popular and widely cultivated groups of flowering plants, especially in temperate climates. Numerous cultivars have been produced, especially over the last two centuries, though roses have been known in the garden for millennia’s beforehand.

While most garden roses are grown for their fragrance and beauty, some are also valued for other reasons, with its large bushes it can provide ground cover or be useful for hedging.

Arranging Garden Roses can be achieved in a very simple way by taking two or three blooms cut short and displayed in a small vase, either on their own or mixed with other flowers.  Nothing can be easier to do and of course it allows you to enjoy garden roses spread out over several rooms.  Always check the water level in small container daily as garden roses are very thirsty flowers.

Always try to give an impression of natural growth when working with garden roses.  Show off the different angles of their large open blooms by positioning some facing outwards to the side.  This adds to the charm of the arrangement.

For a contemporary, minimalist look, arrange several tall, slim bud vases in a row, each containing a single rose.  For a stunning, easy to create centerpiece, float the open rose heads in a large bowl of fresh water and add some foliage or glass beads.  This will create an interesting, textural effect.

DIY: Natural Rose Dye for Fabric

Rose Dyed FabricMaterials needed:
Water
Rose Flower buds
Vinegar
Lemon Juice
Fabric (washed and dried)

1. The first step is to take the rose flower buds, full bloom, and chop them up into tiny pieces. Place this into a pot then add double the amount of water to the flowers.

2. Place this on the stove and bring to a boil, then turn the burner to low and simmer for about an hour. Meanwhile, place you fabric into a separate pot or bowl of three parts cold water and one part vinegar. Let the fabric soak in the solution for an hour, or until the dye is ready. After the fabric has soaked, rinse it out under the faucet then squeeze out excess water.

3. When the dye is done simmering, strain, then toss the petals. There will be excess dye soaked into the petals, so squeeze it out to make the most of your materials. Add lemon juice to activate the alkaloids and the color of dye will be a brilliant pink. Next, add the fabric to the pot and let soak for a few hours or overnight depending on the shade of pink wanted.

Benefits of “Rose Hips”

Rose HypanthiumRose hips (the fruit of the rose which forms at the base of the flower) are a nutritional treasure chest – rich in vitamins (C, E, and K), pectin, beta-carotene, and bio-flavinoids. These elements produce a strong antioxidant effect which protects and enhances the immune system. Rose hips improve blood cholesterol and blood pressure levels, digestive efficiency, and weight management (and are also a special winter treat for birds and wild animals).

Flowering Facts: Roses

Pink Day• Roses are valued for their romantic symbolism but their blooms are also edible. No, they don’t taste like chicken. Rather like the flavors of green apples and strawberries.
• The rose family also includes pears, apples, cherries, plums, peaches, apricots, and almonds.
• The rose is named as the favorite flower of 85% of Americans.
• George Washington bred roses at his home. Apparently, pruning roses came naturally to him (what with all that practice “pruning” cherry trees as a child).
• A fossilized rose – over 35 million years old – was found in Florissant, Colorado.
• Rose hips contain more Vitamin C than any other fruit or vegetable.
• Mythology says that roses grew thorns when Cupid accidentally shot an arrow into a rose garden.
national teacher day• The oldest rose in the world has flourished for over 1,000 years on the wall of Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany.
• On Valentine’s Day in 2010, a whopping 198 million roses were sold in the United States. 59% of them were red. 100% of them were over-priced (see next fun fact).
• Just in time for Valentine’s Day, rose prices typically jump 42% in February.
• There are more than 15,000 different types of rose species and cultivated varieties worldwide.
• A nursery will name a rose after you for a fee. To have the next rose named (not just any other name, but your name) you’ll have to fork over $15,000.

DIY: How to Dry Roses

Dry RosesSometimes people want to dry out their rose bouquets as a memory of why they were given or who they were given by. Air drying your roses is much simpler than you think. This method works best with roses that are fresh, healthy and have retained all their color.
Here’s what you’ll need to do:
1. Remove all of the green leaves.
2. Bunch the bottom of the stems together so the roses fan out. Tie the stems together at the bottom with string or twine.
3. Hang the roses upside down in a dry, dark place. Let them hang for two to three weeks to make sure they are completely dry.

Now you have a preserved bunch of roses from that occasion you always want to remember!

Tip!

For a glossy finish spray your dried roses with hair spray!

Caring for your cut roses…

CARING FOR ROSES• If you have cut roses but won’t be arranging them until later, get them into warm water as soon as possible. Roses need hydration!
• Once you are ready to arrange your roses, always use a clean vase to prevent any bacteria from damaging the roses.
• Fill the vase ¾ full with water.
• Flower food is a key ingredient to helping your roses last longer. Be sure to follow the directions on the package when adding the food to the water. If you do not have any packaged flower food available, you can make your own using 3 teaspoons of non-diet lemon-lime soda into one quart of warm water.
• Remove any foliage that would fall below the water line. Leaves cause bacteria to grow in the water which will shorten the vase life of the roses.
• To cut your stems properly, you should hold the bottom of the roses under water and cut each stem, removing about an inch of stem. It is best to cut the stems under water because this allows for the roses to start absorbing water immediately.
Keeping your roses looking beautiful…
• Always avoid displaying your roses in direct sunlight and near any drafts
• Keep your roses away from ripening fruit as these give off ethylene gas, which shortens the life of the cut flowers.
• Gently remove any discolored or drooping petals.
If your roses wilt prematurely they can be revived!
• Submerge the entire roses under water, such as a sink or bathtub. In about 30 minutes to an hour, the roses will have absorbed enough water to become replenished. Before putting it back into the vase, remember to cut off one inch of the stem under water using a sharp knife or shears.
