You can eat rose petals!

Eat Rose PetalsRoses are actually edible flowers, since ancient times they have appeared at feasting tables as bouquets & as food. The flavors of roses are as unique as the colors. Some say they taste like green apples, some say they taste spicy. The sweet, tart or spicy petals are easy to use & popular additions to any kitchen whether they’re on the plate or in a vase!

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!!! Select fresh roses that are free from pesticides!

Light colored roses are more sweet in flavor rather than darker colored roses which have a heavier aroma & flavor. Taste a rose petal to decide where it belongs on your menu.
Make sure you wash your roses gently with cool water. Blot them dry with paper towels. Pull petals out from the base of the bud & discard any blemished petals. Use the petals immediately or store in your fridge in a plastic bag. To guarantee freshness and best possible flavor, use them within a few days.

Quick Recipe!

5. Put confectioners sugar in a strainer & tap lightly, creating a dust of sugar on the petals

Why do roses have thorns?

Rose ThornsRoses originally grew in area which had large numbers of herbivores, plant eating animals such as cows and rabbits. Rose foliage and flowers are sweet tasting (rose petals can be eaten and a tea can be made out of certain parts of the flower). Many animals seek out sweet tasting plants, so the rose was an instant target. The roses with thorns were less likely to be eaten and therefore survived and reproduced.

Roses with a Twist

DIY: Make Rose water at home for dry skin

RoseWaterRose water is used in cosmetics for its lovely scent, but also because it has light astringent properties. As the gentlest of all astringents, rose water is often used as toner for fair and dry skin.

Be sure you have a brick and heat-safe stainless steel or glass bowl ready before you begin.

Ingredients:
2-3 quarts fresh roses or rose petals
Water
Ice cubes or crushed ice

1. In the center of a large pot (the speckled blue canning pots are ideal) with an inverted lid (a rounded lid), place a fireplace brick. On top of the brick place the bowl. Put the roses in the pot; add enough flowers to reach the top of the brick. Pour in just enough water to cover the roses. The water should be just above the top of the brick.
2. Place the lid upside down on the pot. Turn on the stove and bring the water to a rolling boil, then lower heat to a slow steady simmer. As soon as the water begins to boil, toss two or three trays of ice cubes (or a bag of ice) on top of the lid.
3. You’ve now created a home still! As the water boils the steam rises, hits the top of the cold lid, and condenses. As it condenses it flows to the center of the lid and drops into the bowl. Every 20 minutes, quickly lift the lid and take out a tablespoon or two of the rose water. It’s time to stop when you have between a pint and a quart of water that smells and tastes strongly like roses.

DIY: Submerged Rose Centerpiece

Submerged Rose CPWhat you’ll need:
Glass cylinder vases (variegated or all the same height)

Frog (flower stem holder for submersion)

Decorative glass beads or gems

Your favorite colored roses (a bunch of them, if you have extra that’s ok, well teach you a tip on how you can utilize your extra roses at the end of this tutorial!)

Floating candles

How to create

           1.  Cut your rose stem, not at an angle, but directly across so it lays flat against the frog flower holder

2.       Press spikes of the frog into the xylem or the stem of the rose (this is what holds the flower in place in the vase without it floating)

3.       Place the attached rose with the frog in the cylinder vase making sure its standing up right

4.       Pour some decorative rocks or gems at the bottom of your vase to hide the frog, it also gives it a more complete elegant look

5.       Pour water into the vase until the full rose is submerged, you may get oxygen bubbles on the flower but those will go away

6.       Once the full rose has been submerged place the floating candle on the surface of the water & make sure it is steadily floating without any water touching the wick

7.       Do not light the floating candle and then put it in the water, make sure the candle is in the water before lighting

8.       The safest and easiest way to do this is to light a long tapered candle and use it to light the wick of the floating candle.

9.       You can place other tea light candles around the centerpiece to add more light if that’s the look you’re going for

Tip!

If you have extra roses left over from your project, you can definitely pull the rose petals off the bud & use them around your display.  It adds a decorative touch to a really creative centerpiece that all your guests will rant & rave about at your next gathering!

DIY: Rainbow Roses

Rainbow Rose

Staining roses with dyes is a common practice to get the flower colors that you desire that are not available in nature. Many people love the way blue roses look, very unique, but it isn’t a natural color that mother nature intended to give to roses. However, Rainbow roses are the most unique because the petals of the same rose display different colors. This technique of producing Rainbow Roses was first developed by Peter Van De Werken from River Roses, a flower company located in Holland.

Steps to creating Rainbow Roses:
1. Line up 4 cups, fill with water for each color.
2. Get water based food coloring (oil based does not work) and drop the colors into the cups and stir well until the water is opaque, pour red dye in one cup, yellow dye in another cup, blue dye in another cup and green dye in the final cup.
3. Gather a bunch of white roses with a long enough stem for submersion.
4. Take a knife or a cutting sheer and cut your rose up the stem into 4 equal parts about 5-6 inches up.
5. Dip each stem part into a different color dye cup.
6. Wait about 24 for 48 hours and watch the magic happen right before your eyes! The colors will move upwards through the xylem to the petals which will result in different colored petals.
7. Take the rose out and bind the split ends using floral tape.
The same method can be used for other flowers such as Chrysanthemum, Hydrangea, Carnations, and some species of Orchids.

Tips to remember!
Use water based dye.
Colors should be blended well. Mix it well.
The process of splitting the stems should be done carefully and evenly.
Do not keep your Rainbow Roses in direct sunlight, the roses will dry.

Flowering Facts: Water Lily

White Water Lily

Water lilies come from both temperate and tropical areas of the world, they provide protection and shade for fish and a gentle resting spot for frogs and dragon flies.  Sometimes a water lily can produce an incredible bloom that adds color to the water feature.  The water lily comes from the Nymphaeaceae plant family, which are commonly used in garden ponds and landscape water features.

The plants’ structure consists of a large leaf or “pad” that floats on top of the water and is attached to the soil at the bottom of the pond by a long stem.  Water lilies only live in fresh water that is shallow & still, around the edges of lakes or in small ponds with no current.

You can actually plant water lilies in pots and sink the pots into the pond, or plant the stem directly into the muddy soil at the bottom of the pond.
