Since ancient times, Ginger has been grown in the tropics of Asia. Botanists speculate that the plant originated in India, but because it is not found in the wild, this flower’s origin is uncertain. What is certain is that for centuries, ginger has been used as a food, tea and flavoring. In Roman times, it was valued for its medicinal properties. The Romans may have learned this from the plant’s use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine practiced in India. As an important trade product, potted ginger plants made their way along traditional sea trade routes, and ginger is now grown in most tropical climates.
Of course, while most the medicinal and food uses are focused on the bulbous ginger root, what we love are the beautiful asymmetrical flowers of these tropical plants most typically available in red and pink.
