Flowering Facts: Alstroemeria

Alstroemeria

With beginnings as a very pretty wild flower from South America, alstroemeria has become a major commercial cut flower.  Native to Chile and Brazil, there are about 50 species of alstroemeria.  In their native state, they are pretty but nothing like what we see today as a cut flower.

Alstroemeria means devotion, wealth, prosperity, fortune, friendship and pleasantries.  It is named after the Swedish botanist Baron Klas van Alstroemer who collected the seeds on a trip toSpainin 1753.  Also known as Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas, these flowers come in a variety of types and colors with a long life.

Looking at them in bud stage does not give any indication as to how glorious their colors are when they begin to open.  A vase filled with alstroemeria is a beautiful sight!  They also mix well with other flowers of similar color tones for a monochromatic look.  I suggest 2-3 bunches be placed in a vase and cut 1 ½- 2 times the height of the vase. Watch them open and enjoy!

Wedding Flowers at the W Fort Lauderdale

Lush Celebrations at Field of Flowers (Davie, FL) was thrilled to be a part of Anna and Yomi’s special day for their September 30th, 2011 destination wedding at the super classy W Hotel on Fort Lauderdale beach. Anna decided on a paper lantern theme with dark blues, aqua and the slightest hint of hot pink accents. Our designers created beautiful wedding flower arrangements full of orchids, calla lilies and roses to fit the elegant theme. They held their intimate wedding ceremony on a terrace overlooking the ocean and then hit the sand for what will no doubt be some gorgeous photos! Congratulations, Anna & Yomi! And for others considering a destination wedding, we definitely recommend the W Fort Lauderdale.

Flowering Facts: Chrysanthemum…or you might just say Mum

Mum Plant with Butterflies created by Field of Flowers

The beauty of a chrysanthemum is immediately evident – and it’s no wonder.  The word “chrysanthemum” comes from the Greek word for “golden flower.”   Traditionally and continuously an important cut flower, chrysanthemums come in numerous varieties, and when handled appropriately, have a long post-harvest life.

If harvested as buds, chrysanthemums can be opened in fresh-flower solutions containing 2 – 3 % sugar!  The result is a beautiful flower in vibrant hues – flower colors include white, yellow, orange, bronze, red, purple and pink. A single-type mum will appear as a daisy-like central eye, with petals that resemble quills.

Don’t be skeptical about purchasing chrysanthemums that are two-thirds to three-quarter open – these flowers will actually last longer than the tighter harvest ones. The popularity of mums has had longevity – much like the flower itself.
