The Guy’s Guide to Buying Flowers at Valentine’s Day

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

  1. Don’t forget!   Valentine’s Day is always on February 14th.  This year that falls on Tuesday.  Here’s a little memory trick…it’s 9 days after Super Bowl Sunday.  Put a reminder in your smart phone now!  Even easier…pay attention to the Super Bowl ads and notice the one featuring supermodel Adriana Lima.  I know you can do that!  It will be touting the services of one of the big, national marketers of flowers.  That will remind you to order flowers for your sweetheart.  Extra credit…when Adriana comes on, turn to your wife or sweetheart and say “hey, she looks kind of like you, but not as pretty”.
  2. Don’t order from the big, national marketer of flowers.   They are middlemen, so be strong and ignore the entreaties of Adriana.   You’ll get better, more personal service and lower prices from your local florist.
  3. Don’t send flowers in a box.  Another reason to buy from your local florist is so you can send a professionally designed arrangement in a vase.  The national marketer/middlemen may offer you flowers that will be sent overnight; but they will arrive in a box.  If your valentine loves to arrange her own flowers, and has the time and vase to do it, that’s fine.  But she’ll probably want her flowers to arrive ready enjoy.  And when you add all the extra charges when you send flowers in a box, you may not even save much money.
  4. Order early!  It also may save you some serious money, as many florists will increase prices prior to the holiday.   Other reasons… you may be able to secure a better delivery time, stores and phone lines won’t be as crowded.
  5. Have the flowers delivered early.  This may save you money on the delivery charge, and also get you the kind of recognition you want.  Florists will be swamped on Tuesday the 14th.  Your flowers will be the center of attention if you send it to her home on Saturday or Sunday, setting the mood for a romantic weekend, or to the office on Monday.  Florists deliver flowers in bud stage.  They generally open over 5 days or more, so they’ll be at their peak on the 14th.
  6. Consider colors other than red…  Red and white are certainly not the only romantic colors.  Show some style and creativity.  With roses in particular, there are many gorgeous varieties and colors.  Let your florist pick the nicest, freshest available.
  7. Consider products other than roses…  How about orchids flowers or an orchid plant?  Throw around terms “Phalaenopsis” and “dendrobium” and you’ll get instant respect.  Spring flowers like tulips, freesia and hyacinth are also abundant and beautiful this time of year.

3 Simple Ways to Add Orchids to Your Life

Orchids are a favorite flower of many and it is no wonder why — they have a simple yet undeniable elegance and come in an abundance of colors, shapes, and forms. Here are a few simple ways to add orchids to your life…

1. From simple to elaborate centerpieces – Orchids add a beautiful touch for any occasion. Here are some examples…

In the photo at the top of this post, a simple and elegant look is created by taking a single stem Green Cymbidium Orchid cut to a shorter length, adding a little bit of bear grass and placing them in small square cube for a very simple and elegant look. Use just one, or line up a few of these simple arrangements for more impact.

For a more dramatic centerpiece you can use the yellow Oncidium orchids shown here with fresh cut lemons in large square glass cubes. This photo show three cube vases lined up against each other and the yellow orchids with yellow lemons adds pizzazz and a very fresh spirit. The same idea could use limes, oranges, or other fruits. Mix and match colors to match your setting.

Or…use colorful floral foam to add simple distinction to a bunch of fresh cut orchid stems. Use can use complementary or contrasting colors, bright or mellow, to set the right tone and mood. Add further style with a thin ribbon wrapped around the floral foam.

2.  Wear orchids – For an elegant up-do, you can take a few white Cymbidium blooms and pin them in your hair. They are an eye catching add on to any look. With the vast selection of different orchids and colors, the options are endless.

3. Orchids can be used in various ways to help decorate any party scene, from a wedding to a dinner party.

Above, a few green and purple Dendrobium Orchid stems with a purple ribbon accenting a rustic chair, perfect for a splash of color.

A dinner party place setting becomes complete with a vibrant green Cymbidum bloom to welcome  guests. If green isn’t your color, then choose from various other bright and welcoming shades.

Flowering Facts: Orchids…25,000 different varieties in this vast plant family!

Purple orchid

Oncidium, Dendrobium, Cymbidium and Cattleya are just a few of the more known varieties of orchids, which is the common name for a family comprising of the largest groups of flowering plants.  The family is worldwide in distribution, being absent only from Antarctica and some of the most arid desert zones of Eurasia.  The greatest diversity of genera and species occurs in tropical regions that remain poorly explored.  For this reason, and because of the complexity of the family, estimates of the number of orchid species vary from 15,000 to 25,000, and the number of genera from 400 to 800.  In describing a plant family so vast and so diverse, it is almost safe to say that there are no rules, only exceptions.

Orchids by the stem at Field of FlowersBiologists generally agree, however that one feature above all others defines the orchid and differentiates it from virtually all other flowering plants – the fusion of the male portion of the flower (stamens) and the female portion (pistils).  Orchid flowers are pollinated by a great variety of flying animals, and their diversity in floral structure has resulted from adaptations to various pollinators.  About half the orchid species are pollinated by bees; moths, butterflies, flies, birds, and other agents pollinate the rest.  Many orchid flowers are adapted for pollination by a single species of insect.

Elegant White Orchid in tall cylinder vase from Field of FlowersThere is nothing more striking and graceful than an orchid in bloom.  Orchid flowers come in virtually every color of the rainbow with shapes, textures and fragrances  abounding.  Some are so beautiful they will take your breath away, while others are so unusual, they can resemble creatures of unknown origin!  .

Orchid plants will dress up a tabletop or window.  Several orchid plants together give a splash of interesting color and shapes.  Orchids have the unwarranted reputation of being difficult to grow, but in truth, they are not fussy at all.  In fact, the very adaptability that has allowed them to colonize all corners of the earth has made them very forgiving and rewarding in cultivation.

Orchid stems, cut from the plant, are often used with tropical flowers to create an elegant look.  Perhaps the most show-stopping is of a single or multiple stems of cymbidium blooms simply put in a vase.  Each stem is about 12” long and boasts 5-8 blooms in shades of pink, white, green or lavender.

One of Our Favorite Times of The Year!

One of our favorite times of the year here at Field of Flowers is our Orchid Celebration, which runs January 16th-January 31st. This is time of the year that we celebrate one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful creations, the orchid. One of the most common orchids that’s used in the floral industry is the Phalaenopsis orchid, which is commonly used in weddings. There are over 60 or so species in its genus, so working with these flowers can be a joy for a floral designer since there are so many variations of this beautiful flower.

The Phalaenopsis orchid is found in the rain forests of southeast Asia and northern Australia. They thrive in the warm, humid and damp conditions often found in that part of the world, but are flexible enough to be grown indoors and will grow in different light conditions. The plant that produces these amazing flowers is beautiful as well. Most of the Phalaenopsis producing plants can bloom all year long, but its peak time for flowering is spring and summer. A gift of a Phalaenopsis orchid plant can be a gift that gives all year long…

The hybrid of the Phalaenopsis orchid is also widely used in the floral industry, often to make bridal bouquet. Some of the more popular hybrids are the Cottonwood, Oregon City, and Snow City varieties. Like the standard non hybrid Phalaenopsis, there are a lot of gorgeous variations of the hybrid, such as the Brother Kaiser hybrid that has beautiful and exotic yellow petals with a smattering of little red dots on them. Also there is the eye pleasing Brother Little Spotty that is often eggshell white with little pink dots on the petals that look like fairy dust sprinkled on them with love from Mother Nature.

Mere words can’t do these flowers justice, so visit our Davie and Boca Raton superstores on 1/23 and 1/30 at 2pm for live demonstrations by our talented designer. At the end of the demonstration, the designer’s work is raffled off, so don’t miss your chance to get your very own gift from Mother Nature.
