Flowers have been inspiring friends, family, citizens and lovers for centuries as symbols of various meanings (see also “The Language of Flowers“). Though the history isn’t clear, somewhere along the way the idea of birth month flowers evolved, both in the United States and in England. There is a flower associated with each month, just like there is a birthstone for each month.

The beauty of birth month flowers is that it is a simple way to demonstrate your thoughtfulness in celebrating a friend’s or loved one’s birthday, with flowers from their birth month. Flowers often speak for us in their own poetic way, sharing our meaning when our words don’t do it justice…and what better meaning to convey than to give flowers that say your birthday is special!

Birth month flowers can be given by the stem for a sweet little note, by the gardenful for a grand statement, or in the most popular ways – as the focus flower in a beautiful floral arrangement or bouquet. Birth month flowers can also be used to add fun and decoration for a birthday party or a baby shower, whether as a whole theme, a centerpiece, or a nice gift for guests.

The origins of the birth month flowers predate the internet, so it isn’t perfectly coordinated, and there is some variance between the American and British versions. We think this just adds to the fun of it.

Here is a quick list of which month goes with which flower, a brief birth flower guide:

January – Carnation or Snowdrop

February – Violet or Primrose

March – Daffodil or Jonquil

April – Daisy or Sweet Pea

May – Lily of the Valley or Hawthorn

July – Larkspur

August – Gladiolas or Poppy

Author Gay Smith, who is an expert in flower care and handling has put together this article about why do roses have black edges? 1. WHY BLACK EDGES on ROSES? Black edging happens for two reasons: light and temperature.

Author Gay Smith, who is an expert in flower care and handling has put together this article about why do roses have black edges?

1. WHY BLACK EDGES on ROSES?
Black edging happens for two reasons: light and temperature.

Explanation:
UV light–
Roses are grown in areas with lots of intense light energy. Production areas close to the equator (Colombia and Ecuador) get 12 hours light everyday of the year and the light energy (luminosity) is strongest at the equator vs. northern latitudes.

Pigments in red roses are particularly sensitive to “sun-burning”. This condition is genetic to red, brown and purple rose varieties

UPSIDE: It is this strong equatorial light that also provides us intense colors

Temperature:
Greenhouses in Latin America are mostly not heated so when there is a big difference between daytime and night time temperatures, roses respond in a way that the pigments concentrate. In yellow and pink varieties, concentrated pigments appear as red flames or intense color chips, but in red varieties, pigments appear black.

UPSIDE: The wide variance in daytime—night-time temps gives us HUGE head sizes

2. DO BLACK EDGES AFFECT VASE LIFE?
No, not at all. The down side is simply the effect on aesthetic appearance

3. WHY DON’T GROWERS PEEL PETALS SHOWING EDGING?
• Peeling opens the bud structure and blooms pop fast
• Peeling triggers the internal production of ethylene which shortens vase life
• Ethylene gas is produced as a wound response
• Peeling distorts the bud shape. No one wants a Hershey’s kiss shape rose
• Peeling the guard petals leaves roses susceptible to mechanical damage inherent in transit and handling
• When roses open, the dark edges re-curve down and are not visible

4. WHY DO WE GROW VARIETIES THAT SUFFER EDGING PROBLEMS?
These varieties are selected because they perform well in the growing conditions of Latin America (e.g. large heads, strong, long, straight stems, good opening)

- If you have cut roses but won’t be arranging them until later, get them into warm water as soon as possible. Roses need hydration!
- Once you are ready to arrange your roses, always use a clean vase to prevent any bacteria from damaging the roses.
- Fill the vase ¾ full with warm water. Warm water can be absorbed easier by the roses, allowing for the nutrients to reach the bloom quickly!
- Flower food is a key ingredient to helping your roses last longer. Be sure to follow the directions on the package when adding the food to the water. If you do not have any packaged flower food available, you can make your own using 3 teaspoons of non-diet lemon-lime soda and 1 teaspoon of bleach to one quart of warm water.
- Remove any foliage that would fall below the water line. Leaves cause bacteria to grow in the water which will shorten the vase life of the roses.
- To cut your stems properly, you should hold the bottom of the roses under water and cut each stem at an angel, removing about an inch of stem. It is best to cut the stems under water because this allows for the roses to start absorbing water immediately.
- For optimum vase life, repeat these steps every three days!

Keeping your roses looking beautiful…

Always avoid displaying your roses in direct sunlight and near any drafts

Keep your roses away from ripening fruit as these give off ethylene gas, which shortens the life of the cut flowers.

Gently remove any discolored or drooping petals.

If your roses wilt, they can be revived!

Submerge the entire roses under water, such as a sink or bathtub. In about 30 minutes to an hour, the roses will have absorbed enough water to become replenished. Before putting it back into the vase, remember to cut off one inch of the stem under water using a sharp knife or pair scissors.
