Russian Cut Roses

“Russian Cut” Roses
Please give us your advice on whether or not to offer “Russian Cut” roses at Field of Flowers. We’d love to hear from you!
What does “Russian Cut” mean? Most of our roses are grown in Colombia and Ecuador. Many of the growers there also ship roses to Russia. Over the years they have found that the Russian florists preferred that the roses be cut at a more mature, open stage than is normal for the US market. This is because it is common in Russia for people to give very big, long stemmed roses as a gift, and they are willing to pay a premium for them.
How do growers achieve the Russian cut? Simple…they leave the rose flower on the plant for an extra week or so before harvesting it.
What does that do to the rose? It allows the flower to get nourishment from the plant for the extra days, which allows the rose flower to continue develop and grow. It also allows the flower, stem and leaves to store up more energy in the form of sugar. That energy can be used later by the flower to fully open.
Where does this energy come from? Photosynthesis continues to occur as long as the flower is connected to the plant. That is the process by which the plant converts sunlight and CO2 into food/energy, in the form of sugar.
What is the effect from the grower’s standpoint? It costs the grower a bit more to wait an extra week before harvesting the rose. The larger flowers also take up more space in packing boxes, and therefore it costs a bit more to ship them. Therefore, growers charge a bit more for Russian cut roses.
Why don’t most US florists offer Russian cut roses? The growers offer the Russian cut as an option for US florists, but not many buy it. They seem to believe that the normal, tighter cut rose will last longer…or at least they fear that that is what their customers believe. They also don’t seem willing to pay the higher price for the Russian cut roses.
What are the benefits of the Russian cut rose to the consumer? The flower develops to a much bigger size than the same flower if harvested earlier; and, contrary to popular belief, the flower will last as long as or longer than a rose that is cut at a tight bud stage. Below is a photo of a yellow variety of rose that was harvested at the Russian cut stage. These flowers were placed in water (actually flower food solution) four days before the photo. They are about 50% bigger than they would have been if harvested at the normal stage. They would cost our customers about 20% more than regular roses? Should we offer them? Would you buy them?

FAQ: What should I consider when sending Sympathy flowers?

Golden Memories flower arrangement

Flowers have long been a powerful and visual expression of love, sympathy and tribute. Sending flowers honors the deceased and lends support to those who are grieving. Sending any flower or plant arrangement shares your sentiment, is a heartfelt act and lets others know that you care for them and for the deceased — there are no right or wrong choices and personal preferences should play the largest role in making a decision about what to send. But we are often asked for advice on what flowers to send to funerals and are  addressing some of the most frequently asked questions here:

1) What do most people send? What are the most common types of flower arrangements sent to a funeral or funeral home?

The most common types of sympathy arrangements we’ve seen customers send to funerals are standing flower sprays (floral arrangements that are lifted and displayed using an easel) and flower basket arrangements.  ”Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty”, as noted by Todd Van Beck of A.S. Turner and Sons, and “following the service, the bereaved are left with an indelible impression of the funeral. Flowers are a very important item in this lasting impression, for they directly affect the warmth and comfort generated by the ‘memory picture’.”  Having a mixture of different types and sizes of arrangements and sprays provides for a full background.

Hearts Eternal Wreath from Field of Flowers

Some people want to send something that the family can take home with them following the ceremony.  Small and medium sized floral baskets and plant arrangements that include Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) or Orchids are popular choices.Other options include arrangements in the form of a cross to express religious devotion, in the shape of hearts, or with a patriotic theme.

At Field of Flowers, or your local florist, we can make a custom arrangement to meet your needs, and have a full selection of sympathy and funeral arrangements designed for you to choose from.

2) What color of flowers should I send in a funeral arrangement?

Quiet Tribute standing funeral flower spray

Many people choose to express sympathy with white flowers such as with the Quiet Tribute Standing Spray, but it is just as common to choose vibrant colors or a focal point of the deceased’s favorite flower or color, such as with the Golden Memories.  All flowers are a beautiful expression of your sympathy and a token of respect for the deceased.

3) Should I add a banner or ribbon to the funeral flowers?

This is solely a personal choice. Whereas banners in the past most often identified the deceased’s relationship with family, such as “Loving Son” or “Beloved Sister”, it is also common for friends and co-workers to use a banner as a stronger way to express their sentiment and emotion, sometimes with a message to the family such as “You are in our prayers”.

4) What should I write on the card sent with sympathy flowers?

The best messages are the ones that come from your heart and that may help share the burden of grief. It is fine to include a brief message or a long one. Your florist can help you work it out if you need that. The most common sentiments continue to include “With deepest sympathy” and “You are in our thoughts and prayers”.
