Kids Craft Corner: Make gorgeous Mexican Fiesta Flowers!

What you’ll need for flowers:
• ¼”x12” dowels
• DecoArt acrylic paint, Sour Apple
• Crepe paper in related flowers colors and lime
• Rubber bands
• Aleene’s Tacky Dot Roll Large
• Green duct tape such as Duck Brand

1) Paint the dowels green. Cut the crepe paper packs into thirds horizontally, then cut 2 big scallops at one end of each section.
2) Unrolls crepe paper strips in two colors, lays one on the other, scallops together. Starting at one end, on straight side, roll strips tightly, pleating the paper as it rolls. When done, wrap a rubber band tightly around flower 1” from bottom. Wrap duct tape around the base covering rubber band and paper. Fluff flower.
3) Place 3 tacky dots in a row along dowel at one end. Press them against flower’s base. Use lots of duct tape to fasten flower and dowel together securely. Tapes 2 (6”) lime leaf shapes to stem below flower.
For Container:
Cover a 42-oz, oatmeal box with colored paper, than add strips of additional colors. Weight down the container with 2” of pebbles, than add Styrofoam scraps to help stabilize the arrangement. “Viola!”

Bring Spring Into Your Home!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Nothing hails spring quite like a bud-bedecked branch.  Cherry blossoms deserve special attention this year-2012 marks the 100-year anniversary of Japan’s gift to Washington, D.C., of 3,000 cherry trees.  The most colorful & useful plants are tough to find sometimes.  Here are some names of re-blooming shrubs & greens that look spectacular for springs color palette.  Purple Lilac is the most fragrant out of the bunch, sprouting up & out in a beautiful shade of lavender.  Hydrangea is also one of those fluffy soft blooms that spurt up & out making adorable pom pom like accents to your spring garden.  The last one is the Pink Home Run Rose which isn’t your typical rose bush.  These one of a kind rose almost takes the shape of a Phlox & has a very soft tropical shade of pink to its petals arising you to the sweet spring smell of roses.

As stated above the Phlox is similar to the rose but fewer petals in a surrounding form around the bud. Add some snappy bright colors to your spring garden borders with Phlox. These lavish displays are sweet smelling & tempt butterflies to your garden, too!

Highlight the bold side of nature’s palette by creating your own display with a few easy to find materials. First pick out the style & number of frames for your wall. On a piece of cold press board (a sturdy textured paper) paint the outline of the paper about an inch big using imperfect strokes using frisket ( a liquid that masks areas you don’t want painted.) Pick out different branches of foliage, the best flowers and leaves to use have defined shapes avoid slender stems or wispy leaves.  Try to collect pieces that lay flat for a bolder look then paint over them using your favorite color spray paint using spring colors for a bright new edge in any room.

Boost Your Joy with Yellow!

Boost Your Mood with Yellow Add a burst of color and a dose of good cheer with yellow! It’s a study-proven happiness booster that will make your home sunnier and your mood happier too!

Sometimes it only takes a can of paint or a few accessories to give your rooms the feeling of a sunny day.  The perfect dinner companion is yellow! It stimulates conversation and makes meals more fun. Choosing a yellow floral centerpiece for your next dinner party will be sure to brighten the mood. Daffodils, sunflowers, tulips and even roses are some beautiful bright yellow flowers that would make any occasion a celebration! Painting an old piece of furniture a happy shade of yellow will give it a fresh look with an uplifting hue. A quick tip if you want to tone down the yellow in your room is to mix it with white or cream colored furniture. Even a white-wash wood piece of furniture would soften the tone. Also keep in mind when choosing a paint swatch, pick a color that is one or two shades lighter than the hue that attracts you because sometimes yellow pigments look more intense on large surfaces.

3 Simple Ways to Add Orchids to Your Life

Orchids are a favorite flower of many and it is no wonder why — they have a simple yet undeniable elegance and come in an abundance of colors, shapes, and forms. Here are a few simple ways to add orchids to your life…

1. From simple to elaborate centerpieces – Orchids add a beautiful touch for any occasion. Here are some examples…

In the photo at the top of this post, a simple and elegant look is created by taking a single stem Green Cymbidium Orchid cut to a shorter length, adding a little bit of bear grass and placing them in small square cube for a very simple and elegant look. Use just one, or line up a few of these simple arrangements for more impact.

For a more dramatic centerpiece you can use the yellow Oncidium orchids shown here with fresh cut lemons in large square glass cubes. This photo show three cube vases lined up against each other and the yellow orchids with yellow lemons adds pizzazz and a very fresh spirit. The same idea could use limes, oranges, or other fruits. Mix and match colors to match your setting.

Or…use colorful floral foam to add simple distinction to a bunch of fresh cut orchid stems. Use can use complementary or contrasting colors, bright or mellow, to set the right tone and mood. Add further style with a thin ribbon wrapped around the floral foam.

2.  Wear orchids – For an elegant up-do, you can take a few white Cymbidium blooms and pin them in your hair. They are an eye catching add on to any look. With the vast selection of different orchids and colors, the options are endless.

3. Orchids can be used in various ways to help decorate any party scene, from a wedding to a dinner party.

Above, a few green and purple Dendrobium Orchid stems with a purple ribbon accenting a rustic chair, perfect for a splash of color.

A dinner party place setting becomes complete with a vibrant green Cymbidum bloom to welcome  guests. If green isn’t your color, then choose from various other bright and welcoming shades.

Easy, Inexpensive Christmas Decorating Ideas

Holiday decorating made easy and inexpensive!  All you need are some inventive ways to create your own beautiful, elegant and festive holiday decorations – and almost all the items can be found around your house.

Group together glass vases of various shapes and sizes, then fill them with seasonal goodies such as peppermints or festive colored ornaments.

For a more dramatic look and feel, try filling your vases with ornaments in monochromatic tones of gold or red.  This is a very easy way to add style to your room or table!

Have some ornaments not being used?  Add them to a decorative container and nestle them around evergreens and candles.

Pinecones are another holiday favorite for decorating. Designing them can be as simple as placing them in a bowl with evergreen trim and berries or you can give your pinecones a wintry look by spraying them with silver paint and fake snow.  For that extra touch, add shimmer to your winter pinecones with pearl glitter or glue fake pearls to the tips.

Using small tins or wooden containers around the house are a creative yet frugal way to decorate for the holidays.  Just fill them up with holly and berries or just add some evergreens with pinecones for a festive look.

Add a terrific touch with evergreens! Add them around mirrors, picture frames or mantels for instant holiday cheer. For an extra elegant look, you can add bows, ornaments or pine cones.

For a contemporary and chic look add natural branches or iced branches to any glass vase.  For a touch of elegance hang festive ornaments all around.  For an inviting look instead of hanging ornaments utilize and hang your holiday greeting cards!

Glowing candles are a must during the holiday.  A unique way to decorate your glass votives is to artfully glue evergreens to the outside.  This will not only light up your room but the fragrance of the evergreens will last throughout the holiday season.

Want to try some of these Christmas decorating ideas and don’t have the right items around the house?

Field of Flowers carries many glass vases in all sizes and colors, starting at just $2.50.  Branches are seasonal, but right now you’ll find in our stores branches and leaves covered in gold, silver, red, and green glitter to enhance your centerpieces and displays. We also have a selection of curly willow and various Christmas greens.  Plus we have wreaths, candles, pine cones, spray paints, bows and everything you need to add the perfect finishing touch to your holiday display.
